It has been a little over two weeks since the 2026 UHY Asia Pacific Conference in Shanghai, China, held from July 29–31, yet the learning, inspiration, and sense of gratitude from the experience remain very much with me.
What made the conference particularly meaningful was the opportunity to meet and learn from partners, CEOs, directors, and managers representing UHY-affiliated firms across Asia, Europe, and the United States. Being surrounded by professionals with decades of experience, diverse perspectives, and deep industry knowledge was, in many ways, professionally starstruck. More than simply admiring what they have accomplished, I found myself asking: What can I learn from them, and what can I become if I continue to grow?
Where Tax Meets a Global Perspective
The conference provided an excellent reminder that taxation does not operate in isolation. Businesses today are increasingly interconnected, and tax considerations are influenced by technology, cross-border transactions, mobility, economic developments, and regulatory changes.
One of the highlights of the conference was being selected as one of the presenters for the Tax Presentation, where I had the opportunity to share an overview of VAT on Digital Services. Other presenters discussed Global Mobility, Transfer Pricing, and Tax Audit matters in their respective jurisdictions.
The session was more than an opportunity to discuss technical tax matters. It was also a valuable lesson in communicating complex information to a professional audience—how to structure a message, present with confidence, and make technical concepts understandable and relevant.
For me, this reinforced an important principle in professional practice: technical knowledge becomes more valuable when we are able to communicate it effectively and translate it into practical solutions for clients.
Learning Beyond the Conference Room
The conference was not limited to presentations and technical discussions. Through the members' forum and networking dinners, we were able to exchange ideas on workflow, referrals, collaboration, and the importance of working as one UHY network.
Conversations with professionals from different countries also provided a broader perspective on how businesses navigate economic, financial, and taxation matters in their respective markets.
These interactions made it clear that while jurisdictions may have different rules and business environments, many of the challenges faced by professionals and clients are remarkably similar.
The discussions on ESG, China's continuing economic significance, and the role of AI in Finance further emphasized how quickly the professional landscape is evolving. From ESG reporting and sustainability to the transition of AI from experimentation toward operating discipline, these are no longer simply emerging concepts—they are becoming increasingly relevant considerations for businesses and professional service firms.
Taking the Learning Home
Perhaps the most meaningful part of the experience was realizing that the value of the conference does not end when the conference does.
Every conversation, presentation, and insight gained in Shanghai is something that can be brought back to the workplace—to our teams, our processes, and ultimately, our clients. The knowledge gained from other UHY member firms can serve as a reference for improving how we work, collaborate, communicate, and approach challenges.
And perhaps that is what makes professional growth truly meaningful: learning something new is only the beginning; sharing it and putting it into practice is where the real value begins.
A Humbling Reminder to Keep Going
Looking back, the conference was a humbling experience for someone who started a career from scratch and is still continuously learning along the way.
Standing alongside professionals whom I deeply admire reminded me that success is not built overnight. The expertise, confidence, and leadership that I saw in them were likely shaped by years of experience, challenges, failures, opportunities, and consistent effort.
It reminded me that I do not have to become someone else overnight. I simply have to keep becoming a better version of myself—one day, one client, one challenge, and one lesson at a time.
The Shanghai conference did not just give me new knowledge about tax, finance, and business. It gave me a renewed perspective on the kind of professional I aspire to become.
I am grateful for the opportunity to learn, humbled by the people I met, and inspired by what lies ahead. If there is one lesson I will carry forward, it is this:
Wherever we start does not define how far we can go. What matters is the willingness to keep learning, the discipline to keep improving, and the courage to believe that, with consistent work, we can eventually take our place at the table.
The journey continues—and there is still so much more to learn, contribute, and become.
